Notre Dame’s diverse student community is filled with different talents, skills and passions. The artistic talent of two of these students, Annie Chang ‘20 and Manasa Sundaram '20, is being recognized by the San Jose Downtown Foundation, who chose their artwork for their Downtown Doors project from a record 200+ submissions from 22 different schools.
Juniors Shruthi Sridhar and Shreya Garg were awarded second and third place in the Amgen Bay Area BioGENEius Challenge, the premior competition for high school students that recognizes outstanding research and innovation in the biotechnology field.

Notre Dame was well represented by the Janksters as they competed in the Silicon Valley Regional. The Robotics team handled the challenges of competition with excellent teamwork, collaboration and communications and were also recognized with two awards.

Students Sahithi '19 and Samskruthi '21 recently won several medals at Science Olympiad competitions across the state. Founded in 1984, Science Olympiad is one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 8,000 teams in all 50 states. The organization hosts 450 tournaments annually on college campuses.
Notre Dame's Robotics Team, the Janksters, revealed their 2019 robot to an enthusiastic crowd last weekend. The team has worked tirelessly since January 5 when FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) revealed this year's team challenge, Destination: Deep Space to brainstorm, prototype and build this year's robot.
Notre Dame was pleased to welcome Carl Wilkens, the author of I'm Not Leaving, to campus recently. His personal account of surviving the Rwandan genocide brought a new level of understanding to students who have studied the subject across the curriculum. Notre Dame students welcomed guests from more than 15 Bay Area high schools to their recent Black Light Mixer. The lights, face paint, glow-in-the-dark balloons, along with an amazing DJ helped create the perfect festive atmosphere.
Notre Dame's 16th Annual Crab Fest sold out in just a few minutes this year! The event, made possible by a dedicated committee and more than 200 parent and student volunteers, raised money for co-curricular programs including athletics, robotics, ASB leadership and the Peer Ministry Leadership Team.
Students and staff recently attended Supervisor Cindy Chavez's Women's Leadership Policy Summit where they joined 300 women in an event that showcased powerful women leaders from all age groups and backgrounds. Listening to keynote speakers and attending workshops on key topics including housing, transportation, wage equity and policy inspired students.
Students taking Economics this semester took a walking field trip to visit our downtown neighbor, Heritage Bank, to learn about the opportunities and challenges facing women in the banking industry.
Last week Notre Dame's Class of 2021 participated in two days of breakaway activities exploring themes of community, communion and relationship. One integral component of this breakaway esperience is the Community Action Poverty Simulation, a program of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County’s Step Up Silicon Valley. The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) immersed participants in the reality of a Silicon Valley that grows in disparity as much as prosperity.
Students recently traveled to East L.A. to immerse themselves in the culture of the community and learn about the social, political and economic challenges residents face every day. Through visits to Homeboy Industries and Dolores Mission, students were able to witness strength and resilience and, for a short time, stand in solidarity.
Notre Dame kicked off the second semester with a state of the school assembly for students and a parent event in the evening. Building on their theme for the year, CONFIDENCE, students were encouraged to write their own personal reminder of what they needed to be confident to do this semester.

Justice immersion opportunities are powerful learning tools that surround a student with an intense experience. Through local, national and international immersion experiences, students are empowered to work effectively with diverse populations in a variety of settings to build global perspective, cultural competency and cultural fluency. This week 20 Notre Dame freshmen participated in a local plunge experience at Sacred Heart Community Service, located in the heart of our downtown San Jose neighborhood.
Notre Dame's Regent Collective Dance Company presented its first dance extravaganza, Welcome to the Circus, last week. The show featured jazz, ballet and modern dance performances and was enjoyed by more than 250 attendees!
Notre Dame welcomed 49 women from a variety of industries to our annual junior networking event, providing the Class of 2020 with an opportunity to refine their networking and communication skills. Part of the career and life success program, the event featured 22 Notre Dame alumnae!
The bonds and joy of Notre Dame sisterhood were evident in December as alumnae returned to their downtown San Jose stomping grounds to share updates, reminisce about their high school years and share lots and lots of love and laughter!
In an annual tradition, students, staff and parents created 65 scarves to donate to local agencies this winter. Started by Notre Dame's kind and welcoming receptionist, Emilia Peña-Bobst, eighteen years ago, the project has grown steadily. This year, the 65 scarves, created by Emilia, her crew of students, and some parents and staff are being donated to the Bill Wilson Center and the National Alliance on Mental Illness shelter in our local neighborhood.
Notre Dame's on-campus student group, Latinas Unidas, partnered with campus ministry to organize a celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On that crisp fall morning the entire learning community of students, faculty and staff made their annual pilgrimage to our downtown place of worship, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph for a morning of prayer, song, music and dance.
Notre Dame's Robotics Team, The Janksters, competed at Capital City Classic, their second and final 2018 off-season competition, in Davis in late October. The Janksters traveled with only a third of the team, about 20 people, which meant many people stepped into new roles.
One of the values and traditions of Notre Dame is its engagement in the community. The school is committed to fostering active membership in society including participation in elections. For this important midterm election 21 Notre Dame students were trained and working the polls throughout the county on Tuesday.
Twenty-three vocalists and instrumentalists performed for a crowd of more than 1,900 at the YWCA Inspire Luncheon held at the convention center this week. The students, who wore t-shirts emblazoned with "I believe Anita & Christina and You," earned a standing ovation for their performance of You Will be Found from the musical Dear Evan Hansen.
