AP French Students Study Rodin Sculptures

By Anusha Trivedi '23

Notre Dame’s AP French Language and Culture class recently went on a field trip to Stanford University to immerse the students in French culture and experience the art of French artist, Auguste Rodin. Afterwards, Ms. Lipps, AP French teacher, kindly provided a picnic lunch for her students, bringing hummus, French cheese, salami, chips, Caprisun and more.

Ms. Lipps guided conversations on Rodin and explained the context and intention surrounding his pieces. She discussed his emphasis on portraying movement and human pain in his work, which was on display throughout the campus. Students were able to see his sculpture of “The Gates of Hell,” along with many human figure sculptures like the “Burghers of Calais.” Through this trip, Notre Dame students were able to learn more about French culture and witness beautiful artwork in person. Kati ‘23, one of the students, stated that she “really enjoyed learning the history behind Rodin’s sculptures in class and then seeing those represented in his actual works at Stanford!”
